The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed on July 4, 2025, reshuffles the clean-energy incentives created by the Inflation Reduction Act. Some big-ticket credits live on while many other popular household breaks disappear on December 31, 2025. Before these updates, we outlined what was available in our article Energy Tax Credit Changes To Be Aware Of, which explains the credits as they stood before these updates. Here’s a clear look at which incentives you can still count on, which ones you’ll need to hurry to use, and how to plan around the new deadlines.
What’s Leaving, and When to Act
For homeowners and small-business owners, the clock is ticking fast:
- Energy-Efficient Home Improvement Credit: Claim improvements in service by December 31, 2025. After this date, the 30% credit on windows, doors, insulation, and heat pumps will no longer be available.
- Residential Clean-Energy Credit: You need to pay for and install solar systems, battery storage, geothermal systems, or similar installations by December 31, 2025.
- Clean-Vehicle Credits (new, used, commercial): You must take delivery of eligible vehicles by no later than September 30, 2025.
- EV-Charger and Alt-Fuel Refueling Credit: To qualify, you must place the charging or refueling equipment in service by June 30, 2026.
- New Energy-Efficient Home Builder Credit: You should either sell or rent qualifying homes by June 30, 2026.
- Commercial-Building Efficiency Deduction: To preserve the deduction, construction must begin before July 1, 2026.
What Survives, With Strings Attached
Utility-scale and corporate projects still have opportunities ahead. The successor credits for clean energy production and investment retain their headline rates of 30% under the Production Tax Credit (PTC), but only if construction begins by 2033. After that, the value will decrease to 75% in 2034, 50% in 2035, and will disappear after 2036. Wind and solar developers face an even tighter timeline: they must start construction before July 4, 2026, or have equipment placed in service by December 31, 2027, to retain the full benefit.
Manufacturing incentives will gradually decline. The advanced manufacturing credit will maintain 100% of its Inflation Reduction Act rate through 2030, tapering down to 75% in 2031, 50% in 2032, 25% in 2033, and then ending afterward. Battery and solar component factories still qualify, but project budgets should account for the reduction in benefits after 2030.
Carbon capture projects have gained some advantages, but new restrictions are coming. The credit for CO₂ used in oil and gas now matches the sequestration rate at $85 per metric ton, indexed for inflation. However, starting in 2026, projects owned by or contracting with “foreign entities of concern” may lose the flexibility of transferable credits.
Clean fuel producers will maintain their credit, but only until 2030. The new clean fuel Production Tax Credit continues for fuel sold before 2030 and introduces a domestic feedstock requirement starting in 2026.
Rebates, instead of credits, are still available for home electrification. The High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Program, funded by but separate from the tax code, will continue offering up to $14,000 in state-run point-of-sale rebates through 2031.
Conclusion
Many of the generous homeowner-level credits established by the Inflation Reduction Act will expire after 2025. In contrast, incentives for large-scale projects and manufacturing will remain but will experience reductions and stricter timelines. It’s essential to secure residential projects this year, document the start dates for utility-scale construction, and stay informed about the final IRS rules to ensure you don’t miss out on potential savings or compliance requirements.
