IRS Business Tax Account: Access, Features & Eligibility

IRS Business Tax Account: Access, Features & Eligibility

As the IRS continues to expand its online services, eligible businesses can now access and manage more of their federal tax information through IRS Business Tax Accounts.

What is an IRS Business Tax Account?

A Business Tax Account (BTA) allows certain businesses to access and manage their federal tax record and information.

Who Can Access A Business Tax Account?

Many different business entities can create and access a BTA. Some such entities are:

  • Sole proprietorship with an EIN issued by the IRS
  • Partnerships
  • S-Corporations
  • C-Corporations
  • Single-Member Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) that file Form 1120-S or Form 1065
    • LLCs that file on Schedule C or Schedule F cannot yet have a business tax account.
  • Federal, State, or Local Government entities
  • Tax-exempt organizations
  • Indian Tribal Governments

To set up a BTA for any of the listed entities, go to the official IRS sign-in page, select “create an account,” and choose “business.” However, depending on the type of business entity, different requirements must be met to create an account. To see what the requirements are for each entity type, you can open the IRS Business Tax Account page or use this hyperlink: IRS Business Tax Account Entity Requirements.

What Can a Business Tax Account Access?

The IRS has added many tools that those with a BTA can access. With a BTA, it is possible to access:

  • Business Information: The business’ name, address, and other information about the business on IRS records.
  • Tax balances: Can view amounts owed on returns filed, view past payments and balances, including late payments and any federal tax deposits made. You can also pay balances or schedule payments using a bank account input into your Business Tax Account
  • Tax records: You can pull a tax transcript, like transcripts for income, payroll, and excise taxes filed. You can also view tax compliance information and request a tax compliance check.
  • IRS notices and forms: View and download IRS notices.
